Golden Hat - Hobgoblins

This is my entry for the Golden Hat painting competition from chaos dwarfs online: https://discourse.chaos-dwarfs.com/

The theme was hobgoblins and I went big.
As in the 9th Age hobgoblins have their own army book that includes a karkhadon beast as a mount for your leader aka the Shah, I used an ogre stone horn with a 3D printed Howdah.

The howdah is the extent of the conversions. The howdah fitted quite easily as the top of the beast has a flat finished usually hidden by the ogre rider.

I wanted the horns to be weathered and am happy with the outcome that used heavy bone white paint over watered down black washes.

The hobgoblins also have access to mahouts with three crew and I decided a 3D printed war mammoth was the way to go.

Although designed for chaos warriors of the dark gods I had these printed at 50% which was perfect for the crew.

The crew were also 3D printed with conversions to arm them with halberds. As the pose of the mammoths are a little repetitive I changed a couple of the front legs and added some chains to another to break up the unit.

Painting followed my recent apprise to lighten the skin tone of the hobgoblins with some slight variations to the mammoths from grey and black to some lighter browns.

Although I did not place as a winning entry (the winners were amazing) I am extremely happy with the finished unit.  They dwarf the rest of the mounted hobgoblins as demonstrated above.

More hobgoblins for the 9th Age

Last week the new hobgoblin auxiliary book was released for the 9th Age.

It’s a great read with lots of hobby opportunities that I will be working on over the next few months.

First up is a conversion of a mantic abyssal dwarf with a goblin wolf rider head to represent a hobgoblin levies armed with halberd ams wearing heavy armour.

Second is another classic GW wolf rider with my current approach to the skin using a lighter green and one of the very cool fireforge Mongolian shields from their plastic box set.

Hobgoblin Big Boss 2

Another classic hobgoblin from the early 90s has been finished.

This is the miniature known as Hobgoblin Big Boss 2 and is another classic sculpt.

Like many of this range he can be difficult to track down but is well worth the investment.

I went for a little lighter colour for the green skin and purple armour to differentiate him to the other troops in the hobgoblin horde.

Golden Hat competition

Once again those fine chaps at Chaos Dwarfs Online have produced a fantastic range of entries in the latest Golden Hat xxxvi competition.

I was extremely lucky to take out 2nd play with my entry - a giant flaming hat wearing (hob)goblin.

The giant is from: http://www.madpuppetminiatures.com/bust-and-miscellanea/giant-goblin

I repositioned the arm and added more snot using green stuff.
The hat is a piece of reticulation pipe with lots of green stuff and card for the trim with the odd skull thrown in.
The top of the hat is one of the resin GW base treatments with more green stuff for the flames.
The base is an old scenic one that suited very well.

I used a heap of GW and Valeyo paints and my usual purple approach to match the rest of my boys in my chaos/infernal dwarf army.

Hobgoblin Boss 2

As my quest for every classic 1993 chaos dwarf and hobgoblins continues I am pleased to have finished the bro known as hobgoblin boss 2.

Painting follows the usual approach of my newer hobgoblins having a lighter green highlight on their skin.

More Hobgoblins and finished BSB and Standard

With these eight dudes my unit of old school sword and board hobgoblins is finished.

I also added the reprints of the old school banners to finish off the BSB and the standard for the unit.

Here is the unit in it’s full glory with the BSB.

Hobgoblin BSB and unit

The path to a full hobgoblin army continues with the commencement of a new unit and a BSB conversion.

These are the classic 90s hobgoblins and the BSB is a pretty simple conversion with some extra horns, cloak and and extension to the standards.

The shields come from the plastic Mongol kit frfrom fireforge I used for some mongoblins.

Hobgoblin hobby update

Although not yet released, enough sneak parks have been released concerning the new unit known as externals.  These elite dudes are mounted on bear-dogs and armed with a new monster hunting weapon.

The mini is a 3D print and now it’s on the the other seven I have to paint.

Also below is a classic muso hobgoblin that I finished as well.

Hobgoblin Kamandarans Part 3

After lockdown ruined my last week of leave I at least had extra time to finish the unit of hobgoblin Kamandarans.

Most of these bros have the rifles from lost kingdom minis. I tried a few different conversions to break up the poses but since these are being retro fitted on my former archers some of the hands holding the rifles are not as crisp as I wanted them.

Apart from that I am extremely stoked to have a unit of 26 finished.

The champ is a 3d print whilst the muso and standard are front the unit’s old incarnation.

I have a couple of ogre unit fillers that need some updating so a unit of 30 plus is doable.
