Azrakh the Annihilator - World Eater or Alpha Legion

Based on the iconic 90’sart work of Mark Gibbons, a friend gifted me this mini he received a few years ago with his warhammer plus subscription. As I don’t intend to start a World Eater list anytime soon, the only choice was for Azrakh to reveal his true allegiance to the Alpha Legion.

Painting started with a gold undercoat that would mean all that gold trim painting will be a little less painful. The red was a mix of velvet and blood red speed paints. I used a plasma red for the world eater cables and my usual yellow green mix for the other side.

To achieve the transition effect I followed the approach from my Landraider using the lighter gun metal and white air paints for the sections between the main colours.

With the face I chose a dark skin for the world eater and my usual pale skin for the Alpha Legion side.

I chose parts of the mini that would complement the transition effect whilst keeping the khorne and world eater symbols in their traditional colours of deep reds and gold/brass.

One of the parts on the mini I always liked was the skulls that feature prominently. Unlike the box paint scheme I painted these in whites and bone with a GW contrast skeleton horde paint.

As the height of chaos space marines have increased to match their primaris enemies, I based Azrakh on some cork / tactical rocks so his underlings won’t be looking down on him.

Game wise I will run him as a terminator lord as in a few issues time, the chaos termies will appear in the combat patrol magazine here in Australia.

I also finished painting the Haemotorope Reactor which Azrakh has claimed in the name of Angron or was it Alpharius or someone else.

I am really happy with the finished mini and am proud to call him one of my favourite miniatures.

First game of 11th edition 40K - Alpha Legion vs Iron Warriors

After the Hydra got wiped out in my last game of 10th edition, 11th edition was definitely going to be different. So it was time for a rematch down at da club.

As usual I chose Deceptors which gave me the disruption mission and my iron man bro had take and hold.  The mighty Alpharaddon would be leading the Hydra but this time the Chosen are scheming elsewhere so a unit of terminators joined him.

Although my opponent is the huggiest man in all of warhammer, Steve is a true son of Perturabo and has mastered the skills to be iron within and when needed, iron without.

Early points went to the Alpha Legion who trapped three objective terrain pieces. The iron warriors decided it was time to move forward and the two possessed unit surged forward to eat some cultists and a small legionary unit with a hapless sorcerer.

Bored by witnessing the cultist speedbump, the Iron sorcerer and his terminator bodyguard smashed into the hellbrute. The big fella survived but a few cables had sprung some serious leaks.

Counter charges by my master of possession led legionaries and on the other side, the master of execution and his melee focused legionary unit. Cypher also decided to join the action to help out the master of possession’s charge.

The Obliterators came down and did not kill enough which seems to be their real skill.

Alpharaddon or was it Omegaddon, emerged from the Landraider with his terminators and took out a lone havok and a unit of legionaries.

The iron Obliterators came down and wounded the landraider and then charged the poor old Warpsmith and the transitioning tank. Although they died in the subsequent turn, the left flank was lost as the sorcerer and his termie took it for the iron bros.

Poor old Alphy or is it Omegy’s termies were wiped out by the vindicator and predator.

Bleeding out on one wound Cypher took out the possessed and gather his testicular fortitude for a charge from the incoming chosen, master of executions and sorcerer Death Star block.

Good news, the chosen missed their charge and cypher and the executioner’s unit made their charge into the chosen block thanks to Cypher’s making the iron strats more expense and the Alpha Legion getting a charge distance bonus thanks to other successful charges.

The iron master died along with half the unit but the chosen held the line.

After eating the tank fire, the lone Alpharaddon shot the enemy Warpsmith and then used his claw to destroy the tank. In response it inflicted mortal wounds and then exploded. The big guy was as left with only three wounds which were taken by the vindictor in response.

The iron chosen took the centre objective and sent their own cultists into the legionaries. Most unimpressed, the hydra bros killed them all.

It was a great way to end this first game of 11th, with the Iron Warriors getting the big a 10 point win.

Although it’s a new edition we seemed to stumble our way through the new rules thanks to help from our fine club members.

Alpha Legion Landraider or is it?

The last of my Alpha Legion I have scheduled for painting is now finished with this Landraider.

I picked up this mean machine secondhand and it was painted in a light red red with a legionary in a clearly khorne helmet, some chaos armour and spikes, and the head of an unfortunate imperial guardsmen.

I decided it was time to try the “transition effect" (or "Omegon's Wrath").  To achieve this I used my chrome paint over the soon to be Alpha Legion sections that were then hit with GW kroxigor scales. To get the transition effect, I used an air brush white between the two colours. Over the white I used GW gunmetal air paint.

I used a thin paint brush and in sections that were too big or messy, the key colours of the tank were used to even the effect lines up.

The khorne sections were then painted with a red speed paint and the trim was touched up with various golds.  This came out a more favourable deeper shade of red than its first paint job.

I kept most of the original owner’s flame paint job on the back left hand side but added a little more red to the motif.

The lascannon power cables had a mix of nuclear and plasma speed paints to contrast with the other base colours.

The Alpha Legion sections had the metal trim painted in silvers and a few transfers were added to various panels.

If you look carefully you will see a Hydra logo over the original paint job that had the mighty words of Angron of “kill, maim, burn” painted on.

For a first go at the effect I am really happy how this turned out despite my shaky hands and hesitation of trying something outside of my safety net.

Alpha Legion Legionaries Unit Three

The third unit of legionnaires is now complete with these bros.

I picked them up second hand from the excellent but currently unavailable Start Collecting Chaos Marines box.  The load out is classic legionaries with a mix of bolter and chainswords. Special weapons are the melta gun and heavy autocannon. The champion has the plasma pistol and what I consider an accursed weapon.

Painting followed the approach from my first Alpha Legion legionaries. To not confuse myself with the other units, I painted these dudes weapons with a little more black compared to the others.

As usual blades, cables and miscellaneous items were painted with the customary yellow / green used throughout my Alpha Legion.

They did not have much luck in their last game of 10th edition 40K thanks to the Iron Warriors predator that decided their sneaky strategy of bunkering down in a ruin warranted annihilation. Bring on 11th and the new hiding rule!

I have a few finishing touches to my Alpha Legion landraider and then I will start my next army project, the Deathwatch.

End of 10th edition - Alpha Legion vs Iron Warriors

It was a tough day for Alpharaddon/ Omegaddon as his Alpha Legion took on the Iron Hands in our last game of 40K 10th edition.

The Iron bros took the early lead with favourable secondary objectives and some poor card draws for the Hydra.

Losing legionaries did not stop the Master of Execution and the forgefiend hitting a blocking unit of possessed but were unable to take them all down due to early losses from the yellow and black attack of those damn iron boys.

The chaos bikers avoid the blocking possessed and charge the termies. The enhanced charge bonuses did not deliver enough damage before they were destroyed.

When Kravek Morne and his terminator brothers took down the master and his supporting forgefiend things were looking desperate.

The Obliterators used their deep strike to infiltrate the battlefield and despite their successful charge into the predator, three wounds from a failed dark pact and some poor dice rolling meant the infantry killing tank remained. A counter charge from legionaries killed off the last of the mutie gun machines.

Out of his personal landraider Heaven and Hell (we love you Dio). Alpharaddon/ Omegaddon emerged with his personal chosen body guard emerged to send krab head (as he was called) and his termies back to Medrengard.

Alas this left the big A/O open to combined fire and charges from legionaries and an Iron Master of execution, sorcerer and more chosen.

As expected the big guy was the last to fall.

The Iron Warriors may have taken the battlefield but of course this was the plan of the Alpha Legion all along.
